The recently appeared at Tokyo Auto Salon 2020 model Toyota GR Yaris 2020 will employ the most powerful triple-cylinder engine to date.
In terms of size, the brand-new Toyota GR Yaris will rival the likes of Ford Fiesta ST, Renault Clio RS and Volkswagen Polo GTI. Toyota’s newest minicar has better power with the addition of AWD still to be seen on its opponents. In order to implement AWD, Toyota had combined the foundation of GA-B (available on the new Yaris), and GA-C’s structural design. Aside from AWD, GR Yaris also comes with new double wishbone suspension systems and rear axle system.
The car uses 356mm frontal disc brakes with 4-piston grips; 297mm disc brakes for the back with 2-piston grips.
Powering GR Yaris is the 1.6L triple-cylinder turbocharger giving 257 HP units, max torque stands at 360Nm. Specifically, for the Japanese market, specs are slightly boosted to 268 HP and 370Nm. Said engine combines with 6-level gearbox, 4WD which can later be upgraded with 2 anti-slip differentials through the Circuit Pack. This option also adds high-efficiency suspension systems, 18-inch rims and Michelin Pilot Sport 225/40 tires.
GR Yaris has 3 operational settings: Normal, Sport and Track, respectively distributing traction between front and rear shafts accordingly to ratios of 60:40, 30:70 and 50:50. For each setting, balancing mechanisms automatically reconfigures itself accordingly to road condition, vehicle behavior and driver movements. Thanks to which, Yaris can fully transfer traction to front or rear shafts at instances, providing more effective driving and better corner-hugging.
Weighing 1,280kg, GR Yaris can accelerate from 0-100km/h in under 5.5 seconds before reaching a max speed of 230 km/h.
The car employs 3-door body, with hood shape concaving downwards. At the front, the model mounts large air vents, 18-inch rims and muscular wheels, roof mounted vents, diffuser and dual exhaust system.
The interior is covered with leather and high-quality Alcantara fabrics, contrasting reddish sewing patterns, “GR” embroidered, GR steering wheel and graphics on gauges.
